Messy Bun Hair Groom

Maya | XGen

This semester I created a messy bun hairstyle groom in my directed study with Megan Walker (DreamWorks Character Surfacing Supervisor) and Caleb Kicklighter (Texas A&M University Visualization Professor). I will be surfacing the character and designing the outfit next semester.

I started off with finding a concept illustration by Erin and Jolie Byrne. After finding the illustration, I created draw-over illustrations on references and the character model to determine the shapes I wanted to create in the groom.

I started the hair creation process using the tube groom workflow and went through multiple iterations to try to make the hair feel looser. The main challenge with the hair bun was to make it feel like a messy bun. To make it feel messier, I pulled out additional strands in the main hair and bun.
